Making Christmas Come To Life 

Belfast Botanic Gardens is to host Northern Irelands first festival of light from November 11th, 2021 to January 9th 2022.

Join us for the most wonderful time of the year at the first ever Bright Lights Botanic Belfast as our magical winter trail lights up the evening skies.

The Botanic Gardens in Belfast is a special place to visit at any time of the day or year, but the festive light show gives it a magical twist, as the long trail through the garden sparkles with over  18,000 light bulbs,25,000 meters of neon tubes, 10,000 meters of tree lighting, and some 160 lantern artisans never seen in Northern Ireland before.

Walk the route at a leisurely pace with friends and family enjoy after-dark festivities as you are taken on a Christmas Journey and follow the trail of BOBO.  Share the cute gnome’s journey as he uses his magic to make his way through Botanic Gardens


BOBO’s journey is captured in larger than-life illuminations our enchanted Christmas trail will lead you for the first time through the beautifully illuminated 100,000 square meters of the botanic garden. Which took some  51,200 working hours together with 15,000 meters of silk, 40 tons of steel and 20,000 meters of cable to bring the Northern Irelands first Light display to life.


Get in the festive mood as you stroll through the gardens taking in the starry lanterns, large, illuminated Christmas characters.  Along the route, vendors will offer tasty festive delights, from hot food and sweet treats to spiced winter warmers of hot chocolate

Event Information


Children and visitors under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times and teenagers may be required to show ID.


We will rely on the personal and parental responsibility of visitors to adhere to the guidelines which have been put in place.

  • Will bad weather effect Bright Lights?

    • Bright Lights will still go ahead unless weather conditions are deemed unsafe for our visitors and staff.

  • What should you wear?

    • Bright Lights is a winter outdoor trail so please dress appropriately.​

  • What can I do to ensure the health and safety of others at Bright Lights Botanic?

    • We ask visitors to follow NHS guidelines and wear a face covering or mask where staying 2 metres apart from people is difficult. If you must cough or sneeze, please do so into your elbow, not into your hand or into the air. There are also a number of contactless hand-sanitizing stations available to support the hand hygiene guidelines.

  • Who is Bright Lights for?

  • The magical winter trail is suitable for all ages, families, couples and groups alike. This experience is wheelchair and buggy accessible.

  • Will there be Tea/Coffee?

    • There will be select food and beverage kiosks available for takeaway services along the trail.

  • Security arrangements for entry?

    • Entry to Bright Lights is subject to bag searches. For the safety and enjoyment of all attending.

    • Exceptions will be made for people with medical conditions and children, but all bags will be subject to search.

    • This is an alcohol and drug-free experience.

    • Management reserves the right to refuse admission and to eject any persons attempting to interfere with Bright Lights Botanic. Please note and adhere to all public signage and staff instructions while on the trail.
